I booked an introduction to wildlife photography workshop with Mark Coventry as a surprise for my husband’s birthday. The one to one workshop was held at the British Wildlife Centre near Lingfield, Surrey. The centre has a wide range of native species allowing the wildlife photographer a good opportunity to get close to animals you would struggle to see in the wild.
The workshop began with a look at the techniques and equipment used to obtain images of wildlife around us. Subjects covered included exposure and histograms, lighting, background and camera setting and use of speed and aperture to make sure the subject is in focus.
One tip Ross learnt from Mark was the importance of understanding an animals behaviour. For example if you understand how an otter or a red squirrel behaves you can position yourself to take a high quality photo with maximum impact.
The workshop also offered Ross the opportunity to try out equipment such as tripods, monopods, lenses and memory cards.
Mark is very knowledgable in the field of wildlife photography, he is a very patient teacher and also has a great sense of humour. All in all we had a great day at The British Wildlife Centre and would highly recommend one of Mark Coventry’s worships if you have an interest in wildlife photography. Details of the range of workshops he runs can be found on his website.
What an absolutely fantastic present! Your pictures are absolutely beautiful. They look like they came right off the page of a National Geographic magazine!
Thanks Heather. You are so sweet. Ross will be thrilled to know you thought his photos were that good. Emma xx
What a fantastic course! I would love help on how to photograph birds in flight – something I still battle with. Have learnt about a setting on my camera to help – now just to find a bird.
Have a wonderful day Emma.
🙂 Mandy xo
Thanks Mandy. It was great fun. You probably live in one of the best parts of the world for wildlife photography. I fell a little bit in love with the bird South Africans call the flying banana when I was on safari. Emma xx
What a great present!!! Beautiful animals.
Thanks Mimi. It was a really fun day for both of us. The British Wildlife Centre is def worth a visit if you are over visiting Emma. Judi Dench is involved a lot now because she dates the wildlife conservationist who owns the park. Emma xx
Wow! Great photos!
Oh! I’m so glad you came my way. What a fabulous opportunity for the both of you. And the owls are gorgeous! (I am an owl lover. My family would say more like “obsessed.”) 🙂
I love owls and birds of prey too. My husband and I are real animal lovers too. Than British Wildlife Centre is a national treasure. Emma xx
We used to run a photographic studio where we’d take a lot of family portraits. Often people would come in with their dogs and that certainly made for an interesting photo shoot! I agree that you need to understand an animals behaviour/nature in order to capture them at their best xx
That sounds like my dream job. I am animal mad!
